Servants and priests of The Lady Torma, Chronicler of Xaria
General:
The followers of the goddess Lady Torma are the Witnesses of Torma. They are made up of all races, ages, genders, and backgrounds. Their role is to travel the world experiencing events as they unfold. Through the senses of these Witnesses, Torma chronicles the world, recording the story of Xaria. The Witnesses believe in the existence of most other gods and goddesses but feel that Torma is greater, and came before them. She is one of the eternal beings, here before the gods were created from the void, and will be here after this world ceases to be. The Witnesses role is to make sure that Torma can have an accurate and complete account of the history of Xaria, so that its stories and accomplishments can live beyond this world.
Devices and Uniforms:
The Witnesses will all wear their symbol for the Lady somewhere on their person. No other obvious uniform or equipment will mark a Witness different than any other traveler.
Goal:
The Witnesses of Torma seek to experience all that life has to offer. It is the belief of the group that Torma observes this world through the senses of the Witnesses. For that reason, the Witnesses seek to, for lack of a better word, witness all that Xaria has to offer.
Territory:
The religion's one outpost / temple is located at Dresnell Keep, on the rocky coastline in the northeastern part of Akkoria. The witnesses themselves, however, travel to all ends of the world.
Genesis:
There is a creation tale describing the genesis of Torma and her Witnesses. This tale is believed as truth by members of this Order.
Past:
Torma's religion has been fairly secretive throughout history. It was felt that in order to Witness the world around them in its true form, the Witnesses could not allow others to know of their task. How would it seem if the people knew they were being witnessed, and began putting on shows or acting less than naturally? The scholars amongst the Witnesses are thought to have an extensive history of the sect.
Present:
After a busy time of making sure that the turn of the century was well seen, the Witnesses have settled back into their routines of traveling, watching, and questioning.
Alliances:
Because of the impartiality that Torma represents, few other groups even know of Her sect, and the Witnesses have intentionally remained fairly secretive. For these reasons, the group as a whole has no formal Alliances, other than those formed by Witnesses as individuals.
Enemies:
See Alliances.
Leadership:
The leaders of this religion are those who have been Witnesses for the longest. The current 'Eyes' is Witness Alberath. His full title reads: Eyes to the Lady Torma, Witness Alberath.
Divisions:
There are no divisions within this sect, every Witness more-or-less works alone.
Code & Prohibitions:
Because of the nature of the Witness' task, there are no strict prohibitions. Torma tries to have a varied group of Witnesses working for her, i.e., good, neutral, evil. It is unrealistic for the Witnesses to be prohibited in interacting in the events they witness, so, the sect tries to make sure that the over-all effects caused by the Witnesses are balanced. The only thing resembling a prohibition is that Witnesses are encouraged to keep the sect to themselves, and not reveal their role in this world.
Recruitment:
Until recently, new Witnesses were usually drawn from within the families of current Witnesses. Both sons and daughters of current members were welcome. Occasionally, an outsider who somehow learned of the sect and wished entry would be welcomed.
Typical Member:
The Witnesses of Torma can be of any age, race, background, appearance, and gender. They share one quality, their unquenchable desire for new and different experiences. One strange aspect of the power of Torma is that over time, a Witness' hair will turn silver. Witnesses will tell you it is simply a sign that the Lady favors her kind, and marks them in this way. The process takes several decades and only the highest levels of Witnesses will have jet silver hair. Younger Witnesses will just show a hint of silver, appearing to be "going early gray".
Generally Known:
Quite frankly, hardly anyone knows of the Witnesses. But I bet most travelers have met a Witness, and not known it. Some of the larger religious organizations will have knowledge of the sect, but it will mostly be old data, history texts and fragments of ancient documents. There have been stories of the Witnesses teaching small prayers and spells to children. Not much is known about what those spells do, but there are plenty of rumors.
In-Character Quote:
My Lady Torma, my five senses are to you.
Through my eyes, see the world around me,
My ears find the sounds for you to hear,
My nose, breathing life for you to live,
Through my lips you speak on this world.
My hands are your powerful hands.
Lady Torma, my five senses are to you.
This is the first prayer taught to new Witnesses. Often used on the road when meditation and focus are required.
Yes. If you wish to play a Witness, or run some plot lines involving Torma, please speak with Mike A, for there is a lot that is not written here for brevity’s sake.
